Having a shed is a bit like having a house: you need to make sure that it is well organized and free of clutter or it can quickly become a place that you don’t really want to be. Just because you don’t live in your shed, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t do small things to ensure that it stays organized and easy to access. If you are having trouble keeping your shed neat and tidy, below are some tips to help you make sure that your space is organized every single day of the year.
Wrap Your Hoses
Anyone who has ever entered a shed looking for something and tripped over a garden hose that is just strewn on the floor knows how frustrating that is. One of the biggest culprits when it comes to shed disorganization is the garden hose. Invest in a hook that you can wind your hose around, particularly during the winter months, so that you are not tripping and falling (potentially dangerously) while you are in there looking for the snow blower or your skis.
Get a Tool Hanger
Having your tools on the floor or leaning up against the wall is a surefire way to either lose them in the mess, or have them fall, and lay rusting on the floor. Get a tool hanger from a hardware or home and garden store that allows you to store your tools vertically. That way, they are off the floor and easy to locate when you need them.
Get Some Shelves
One of the fastest ways for a shed to become cluttered is to fail to utilize as much vertical space as possible. Many people quickly exhaust their available horizontal space on or just above floor level, and end up piling new things on top of old ones as they accumulate stuff. Getting a shelving unit into your shed right after it has been built will allow you to capitalize on the most important space in your shed: the vertical space.
Get Some Magnets
For those small hand tools that you use in the garden every day, one of the best things that you can invest in (both from a maintenance and an organizational perspective) are magnetic hangers. Instead of tossing tools into a box (where they can be hard to locate), keep them firmly stuck to magnetic racks, or strips that you can mount to the wall with ease.
Keeping your shed organized doesn’t have to take a ton of time. You can easily keep your shed well organized, and have everything in its rightful place, off the floor, and well protected, if you keep the above organizational tips in mind.
