5 Tips for Designing a Cottage Garden

If you want to have your very own cottage garden, there are a few tips that you should take into consideration before delving into your project. First off, you don’t need to have a cottage to enjoy a beautiful cottage garden. With the right landscaping tools and techniques and the right type of planning, you can create a magical space wherever you live.

There are plenty of ways to create a garden that is charming. The great thing about a cottage garden is that it is very forgiving and can be a little messy even. In fact, the messier, the better but within reason. A controlled “mess” is what you are aiming for. Thus, the charm and hominess and lived-in look will emerge. You want to start with plenty of flowers and foliage.

You will have to work with your climate. You can’t just plant what you want and expect it to grow, unfortunately. Typically, the types of flowers and plants that you will find in your nursery are going to be native to the area. What you have to consider before buying your plants and flowers is where you want to place them. You will also need to determine how much sunshine they will need. Some plants require full sun while others need more of a shady residence. Still, others may refer to be more on the middle rather than in one extreme or the other.

There are a few items that communicate that your garden is meant to have that cottage feel. Paths, gates, pergolas, and white picket fences all lend that cottage feel.

It’s a good idea to plan out your garden before you head to your local nursery. You want your choices to compliment each other and you don’t want your colors to clash. You are aiming for a balance. Thinks of incorporating walls, fences, hedges, gravel, stone paths, and ornaments. Think whimsical and nature-friendly. Add a birdbath, a birdfeeder, and a comfortable reading bench.

Containers are a must. You want big ones, small ones, old, and new ones. Cluster them together and use them to edge a garden bed or to line your steps. Don’t be afraid to use lots of colors and a variety of plants. Use vines, decorative grasses, daisies, and plenty of wildflowers. If you don’t want to have to plant your entire garden each year add a few perennials each year and add a few annuals here and there.

Try new things, mix and match, and experiment. Landscaping is a work of art in the making and can take time to find the right formula and for it to get established. There’s no right or wrong way to create your garden, but if you follow these tips, you will create a garden that feels like an escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy world no matter where you live.
