If you’ve ever looked at a product label and seen “Made in Canada” or “Product of Canada,” you might have thought, “Cool, it’s Canadian!. But did you know those two phrases don’t mean the same thing? It’s a little detail that can be confusing, especially if you’re trying to support local businesses and buy truly Canadian-made products.
At In The Back Yard Limited, we take pride in the fact that every single shed, pergola, or wooden structure we build is “Made in Canada”. We want you to feel good knowing that when you buy from us, you’re getting a product that’s actually built right here by hardworking Canadians.
So, let’s break it down: what’s the difference?
The phrase “Product of Canada” means that at least 98% of the materials or ingredients for that product come from Canada. That last 2% could include imported parts, minor additives, or materials that just aren’t available here.
This label is more common on food products. Think of things like maple syrup, dairy, or fresh produce—if you see “Product of Canada” on a bottle of honey, for example, you can be pretty sure that everything, or nearly everything in that bottle is from Canadian bees and farms.
However, most companies import at least some materials that they cannot source in Canada, so they rarely use “Product of Canada” for non-food products like furniture, sheds, and other manufactured goods.
Now,”Made in Canada” is a bit different. This label means that at least 51% of the total production cost (including labor, manufacturing, and assembly) happens in Canada. Some materials come from different places, but the final product is actually made here by Canadian workers.
This is the label you’ll see on things like clothing, furniture, and—you guessed it—sheds! When you buy a “Made in Canada” product, you’re directly supporting Canadian jobs, craftsmanship, and local businesses.
We are proud to say that every single shed, deck, pergola, and wooden structure we build is “Made in Canada”. While a small part of the building materials we use for our wooden sheds are sourced from other countries, the majority of our materials come from Canada, and every step of the construction process happens here. Because we’re local, we understand the unique weather conditions in Canada. So we make sure our structures can withstand everything from summer heat waves to harsh winter storms.
We’ve been doing this for over 10 years, and we take pride in what we do. Our team builds every structure by hand, giving it the same level of care and attention to detail we’d want for our own backyards.
When you buy a shed or any outdoor structure from us, you’re not just getting a great product—you’re supporting a local, family-run business. You’re helping to keep jobs in Ontario, fueling the Canadian economy, and making sure your backyard gets a quality-built structure that will last for years.
So, the next time you see a “Made in Canada” label, you’ll know exactly what it means. And when you’re looking for a sturdy, beautiful, shed, deck, pergola or other wooden structure, you can rest easy knowing that every single one of our products is truly and proudly “Made in Canada”—with Canadian materials, by Canadian hands, for Canadian homes.
