FAQ
Do You build custom sizes?
Yes we can build custom size sheds. Give us a call at 905-664-4224 to discuss your design ideas or send us an email at info@inthebackyard.ca with the details. We will work with you to create the shed you want.
Do I need a permit?
In most municipalities in Ontario you are permitted to build up to a 160 square foot structure without a permit. If unsure about the guidelines in you area, check your local municipality website for more information.
What type of wood is used when building a shed?
We build all our shed walls using Smartside LP panels which have a manufactures 50 year limited warranty. Floor joists are built using 2 x 6 pressure treated lumber and shed framing is 2 x 4 construction. Our standard floor boards are 5/8" OSB and our roof boards are 7/16" OSB.
You can upgrade to plywood for the roof or pressure treated plywood for the flooring.
Depending on the structure we are building, the trim is made using pine or smart panel.
How long does it take to install a shed?
Typically our standard sheds take around a half day to install. For larger sheds or custom sheds, it could take a full day or longer.
Will you paint the shed?
If you want your shed painted, we can help you with that. You can choose the colour you want for the walls and one colour for the trim, or have the entire shed painted all one colour. There is an additional fee for this service and the cost of paint is not included in this fee.
What areas do you service?
With our shop located in Stoney Creek, Ontario we are able to service much of the GTA, Niagara, Kitchener/Waterloo and London areas. Not sure if your property falls within our service area, just give us a call.
Are there height restriction on sheds?
The standard height of our sheds is 6 - 8 feet but we have built some custom sheds with 10 foot walls. We have found no issues with these heights but each municipality has their own restrictions, so check with your own municipal building department if they have height restrictions.
What type of shingles do you use and is there a warranty?
We use architectural shingles that have a 25 year manufacturers warranty. The standard colour we provide are brown or black shingles. However, if you have a specific colour in mind, or want to match the shingles on your house, let us know and we can help with that.
What do you provide as a foundation?
We standardly provide a block and gravel foundation. Depending on the size of the shed, this means digging anywhere from 4 to 10 holes, 6 inches deep. Gravel is then placed in each hole for drainage and either a patio stone or cinder block is levelled on top of each hole. This becomes the footing for the shed build.

Can I install the shed myself?
Yes, definitely! Just let us know you want to build the shed yourself and we will provide you with the pre-fabricated walls, roof trusses, framing, nails, screws, etc. and of course easy to follow instructions. If you have a trailer big enough feel free to come pick up the materials at our shop, or if you are within our service area we can deliver it all to you (delivery fees apply).
