Somewhere along the way, backyard shed ideas became limited to a designated home for lawn mowers bicycles, gardening tools and all those things we don’t quite know what to do with.
And fair enough. They’re pretty good at that job.
But there’s a lot more you can do with a little building in your backyard. In fact, some of the most interesting sheds we’ve built have very little to do with storage.
Ever started a project on the kitchen table or in the garage, only to have to pack everything away before you’ve finished?
Whether you’re into woodworking, painting, crafts or restoring furniture, having a dedicated space means you can leave everything just as it is and pick up where you left off.
A workbench, some shelving, good lighting and a little room to move around. Nothing particularly fancy, but what a difference it can make.
Working from home is convenient, but sometimes the distractions can be endless.
A backyard office offers something a room inside the house often can’t – a little distance from the everyday activity of family life.
With insulation, electrical service, windows and a comfortable layout, a backyard shed can become a workspace you actually look forward to spending time in.
And at the end of the workday, you can close the door and walk home. Not a bad commute!
Here’s where things can get interesting.
We’ve built a shed specifically for a golf simulator. Yes, a golf simulator! We’ve also built sheds for motorcycle storage, complete with the space and access needed to make them practical.
Then there are poolside sheds with roll-up bar windows, covered seating areas and change rooms. Or a quiet backyard retreat for someone who simply wants a little space to themselves.
The point is, a shed doesn’t have to follow any particular set of rules when it comes to how you use it.
Sometimes the best ideas come from simply asking yourself, “What would I love to have in my backyard?”
Let’s not forget the traditional shed.
There’s something satisfying about having an organized place for your outdoor equipment, seasonal decorations, bicycles and everything else that needs a home.
A well-designed storage shed doesn’t need a lot of extras to do its job well. Choosing the right dimensions, door placement and interior layout can make all the difference.

The interesting thing about backyard sheds is that two buildings of exactly the same size can serve completely different purposes.
One homeowner might fill theirs with garden equipment,, while another turns it into a woodworking shop. Someone else might add windows and a comfortable chair and finally have that quiet little retreat they’ve been thinking about.
At In The Back Yard, we enjoy hearing what homeowners have in mind. Sometimes it’s a straightforward shed, and sometimes it’s an idea we haven’t seen before.
Either way, it all starts with what you want to do with the space.
After all, it’s your backyard. Why not make room for something you really enjoy?
